Overview
The International Year Zero in Health and Life Sciences provides international students with a structured route towards the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy degree. The programme introduces students to health and life sciences while developing the academic and transferable skills required for successful undergraduate study. Students build foundational knowledge in relevant scientific and health-related areas and strengthen their abilities in academic writing, research, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, numeracy and independent learning. The programme also supports students in adapting to the UK higher education environment and understanding university teaching, learning and assessment methods. Through structured study and academic guidance, students can develop confidence and effective learning strategies before progressing to their chosen professional degree. Successful completion of the International Year Zero and meeting the required progression criteria enables students to continue to the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy degree. The undergraduate programme can provide opportunities to explore how occupational therapy supports individuals experiencing physical, psychological or developmental challenges and helps them participate in everyday activities. Students can develop knowledge related to rehabilitation, health promotion, wellbeing, communication and person-centred practice. This pathway is suitable for international students interested in healthcare and rehabilitation who want to support people in improving independence, participation and quality of life. It provides additional academic preparation before progressing to undergraduate occupational therapy education and future professional opportunities in health and social care.
