Overview

Comparative Politics, Policy and Governance is a specialised research area within the Politics and International Relations postgraduate research programmes (MPhil). It is supported by a strong and well-established research culture, with the School recognised for the quality of its research output and its success in securing research funding. The academic environment is further enriched by research centres such as the Wales Governance Centre and the European Governance, Identity and Public Policy Research Unit, which attract visiting scholars from across Europe and beyond.

The programme offers supervision across a broad range of topics within comparative politics and governance. These include regional and thematic areas such as African, American, British, and European politics, as well as key issues like devolution, electoral systems, public policy, political economy, human rights, globalisation, and social movements. Additional areas of focus include nationalism, multiculturalism, environmental politics, and territorial governance.

Students benefit from a diverse and internationally connected research environment, enabling them to explore complex political issues from comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. The breadth of expertise available within the School supports the development of rigorous, original research that contributes to contemporary debates in politics and public policy.
