Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Criminology

The BA (Hons) Criminology degree provides a comprehensive understanding of crime, punishment, and victimisation, supported by strong links with local criminal justice organisations across the voluntary, public, and private sectors, including West Midlands Police.

The course explores key criminological theories, examining their historical, political, and social foundations, as well as their application in contemporary contexts. Students are encouraged to develop a broad perspective on criminal justice issues while engaging critically with real-world challenges.

The curriculum offers a range of subjects, enabling students to explore different areas of interest before specialising in topics such as homicide and the harms of powerful individuals and institutions. The programme focuses on current and emerging issues in crime and social justice, providing an engaging and relevant learning experience.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, offering valuable experience within criminal justice or related settings. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The degree equips graduates with the knowledge, analytical skills, and professional awareness needed for careers in criminology and the wider criminal justice sector.
