Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Architectural Technology
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology degree is designed for those interested in pursuing a career as an Architectural Technologist. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), combining the technical aspects of construction with the creative principles of design.
The programme emphasises hands-on learning, supported by strong industry links and access to industry-standard CAD and visualisation software. This approach enables students to develop practical skills and professional experience relevant to the built environment sector.
Students learn to design and analyse a wide range of building types, considering factors such as buildability, construction technology, procurement, and contractual processes. The course also explores the roles of the various professionals involved in construction projects, alongside the wider social, regulatory, technical, environmental, and aesthetic contexts of the UK and global construction industries.
An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
The degree equips graduates with the technical knowledge, design skills, and industry awareness required for careers in architectural technology and the wider construction sector.
