Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Media and Communication
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The Media and Communication degree explores key questions about how media is produced, who creates it, how it is consumed, and whose interests it serves, highlighting the impact these factors have on which stories and voices are prioritised or overlooked. In an ever-evolving media landscape, the course equips students with critical, transferable, and technical skills that prepare them for postgraduate study, careers in the media industry, and a wide range of other sectors.
This four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who do not initially meet the requirements for direct entry onto a three-year degree, providing additional Level 3 study to support academic success. After completing the foundation year, students have the flexibility to transfer to related undergraduate media degree programmes if they choose. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to explore and develop their own research and professional interests, gaining an understanding of how media industries shape stories, representation, identity, and culture, as well as how audiences interpret and engage with media.
Alongside critical analysis, students develop practical skills across television, radio, photography, and digital media, combining research with hands-on production to explore contemporary issues and emerging platforms. The course fosters creativity and independent thinking, enabling students to critically examine the past, present, and future of the media industry, and to produce innovative, responsible media content for diverse audiences.
