The Composition specialisation, offered within the suite of Music research degrees (PhD), provides an opportunity for students to study with internationally recognised composers and develop advanced expertise in contemporary music composition. The programme is designed to prepare students for professional careers in composition, combining creative practice with critical academic study. Students benefit from regular composition seminars, which explore compositional techniques, new repertoire, and feature contributions from visiting composers.

A key feature of the programme is the opportunity for students to have their work rehearsed and recorded in workshops with professional performers and ensembles, allowing them to refine their ideas in a collaborative and supportive environment. Additional opportunities include conducting their own compositions with the University’s Contemporary Music Group and visiting ensembles, further enhancing practical experience.

Assessment is based on the submission of a major work or portfolio of original compositions, accompanied by a written commentary that critically analyses the work and situates it within an academic context. For PhD candidates, the commentary typically ranges between 10,000 and 20,000 words. Practice-led research is evaluated according to the same standards as other research degrees, with an emphasis on sustained inquiry and the generation of new knowledge.
