Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Architectural Technology
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology with Foundation Year is designed for those interested in the technical and practical aspects of the built environment, combining construction science with design principles. The course focuses on both the creation of buildings and the organisation of the spaces within and around them, preparing students for careers as architectural technologists.
Delivered over four years, the programme includes a Foundation Year that provides a broad introduction to key concepts and supports progression onto the full degree. Learning is highly practical, with opportunities to engage in hands-on activities supported by strong industry links and access to current technologies, including advanced CAD software. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), reflecting its alignment with professional standards.
Students develop the ability to analyse existing designs and create new ones, considering factors such as buildability, technology, procurement, contractual processes, and stakeholder collaboration. The course also explores the wider social, environmental, regulatory, and aesthetic contexts of the construction industry, both in the UK and globally.
Through live projects and industry engagement, students gain experience using tools such as 3D CAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM), including contributing to the development of BIM models for real-world projects. The programme also develops skills in planning, negotiation, project management, and contract administration. Strong links with employers provide opportunities for placements and professional networking, helping students gain valuable industry experience.
