Bachelor of Education - School Years

University of New Brunswick - Fredericton

What you will study

Program Description Educators don’t just teach subject matter, they guide and support students on pathways of learning. As an educator, a student's role changes from class to class, semester to semester, year after year. Education is for independent and passionate individuals who envision lasting positive changes in their local communities and across the world.

Students must complete a Bachelor’s degree before applying to the B.Ed. degree. The 11-month program includes 60 credit hours of coursework and in-school teaching experience.

UNB’s Faculty of Education offers specialized areas of study in Aboriginal education, second language education, art, health, literacy/drama, mathematics, physical education, science, social studies, early childhood education, exceptional learners, and guidance and counselling.

With UNB’s hands-on practicum approach, students will receive the opportunity to turn classroom theory into practice right away. If travel is of interest to a student, choose to complete the advanced practicum in an international setting.

Because classroom experience is crucial to becoming an effective teacher, students are provided with a fully integrated practicum that includes three blocks: • Initial (takes place during the first two weeks of school) • Intermediate (occurs over three weeks in November/December) • Advanced (seven weeks during the spring) • Every Monday during the fall and winter terms • Also, for those students studying Early Childhood Education, students are provided with practical experience in the on-site Children’s Centre to observe and interact with the children on an ongoing basis while they complete the program.

Skills students will acquire: • Critical Thinking • Effective Communication (written and oral) • Leadership • Mentoring • Cultural Intelligence • Active Listening
