Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Professional Policing
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
This Policing degree is a national pre-join programme licensed by the College of Policing, designed to prepare students for a career as a Police Constable. The course is delivered by subject experts and experienced practitioners, including former police officers, providing insight into professional practice and the realities of modern policing.
Developed in consultation with police services and the College of Policing, the programme enables students to explore the core principles of policing while developing the practical and transferable skills required for roles within law enforcement and the wider criminal justice sector.
The course covers key areas such as policing theory and practice, legislation, police powers, and structured interviewing techniques. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking and analytical skills through a range of complementary modules. Practical learning is supported through activities, events, and engagement with guest speakers from across policing, criminal justice, and public sector organisations.
An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing an opportunity to gain relevant work experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
The programme equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional understanding required to pursue careers in policing and related fields.
