Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Textile Design

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

Textile Design is a creative discipline that explores the use of fibres, yarns, and processes to produce materials with distinctive qualities and applications. It has wide-reaching relevance across industries and plays an important role in addressing environmental and social challenges through informed and responsible design.

The course is designed to develop innovative and industry-ready designers with expertise across key areas of textile practice, including print, weave, knit, embroidery, and material innovation. Students are encouraged to experiment with both traditional craft techniques and digital technologies, with opportunities to specialise in a particular discipline or adopt a cross-disciplinary approach.

An emphasis is placed on creativity, sustainability, and the potential for textiles to influence behaviour and raise awareness through artistic and functional applications.

The programme also offers an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

Graduates are equipped with the creative, technical, and professional skills needed to pursue careers within the textile and wider design industries.
