Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Creative Writing

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing programme supports the development of contemporary writers across a wide range of forms, genres, and platforms, including prose fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, screenwriting, audio drama, podcasting, and digital media. It provides a supportive environment in which students can explore ideas, develop confident and versatile voices, and produce original and impactful work.

The course encourages engagement with creative and literary traditions alongside innovative techniques and emerging technologies, helping students prepare for opportunities within the creative industries. Through workshops and applied practice, students learn to write effectively and pitch ideas for different audiences and contexts.

A strong emphasis is placed on professional development, including publishing experience, market awareness, and opportunities to take part in industry-focused or entrepreneurial projects. This ensures graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue careers in writing and related fields.

At its core, the programme is driven by a shared interest in storytelling and the impact of words. Taught by experienced writers and educators, students are part of a supportive learning community where they can explore writing in ways that are relevant, meaningful, and responsive to contemporary contexts.

To enhance employability, students have the opportunity to undertake an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study. This placement, which students are responsible for securing with support from university staff, provides valuable experience in industrial or research settings, although it is not guaranteed. Students who undertake a placement year can transfer to the relevant course pathway and will pay a reduced fee during this period.
