Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year is an industry-focused degree designed to prepare students for careers developing innovative electrical and electronic systems across a range of sectors, including telecommunications, renewable energy, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. The course takes a practical, hands-on approach to learning, replacing traditional lectures and exams with real-world, problem-based tasks that reflect current industry challenges.
Developed in collaboration with industry partners, the programme equips students with both core technical knowledge and essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. Graduates are prepared for a wide range of career opportunities, including roles in areas such as electric vehicles, consumer electronics, robotics, and medical technologies.
The Foundation Year provides a preparatory stage for students who do not yet meet the entry requirements for direct entry onto the degree. It builds a strong grounding in key areas such as mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, while introducing practical skills through hands-on projects and laboratory work. Successful completion of the Foundation Year enables progression onto the full degree programme.
The course offers an optional professional placement year, providing students with the opportunity to spend a full year working with an employer after successfully completing their second year of study. This placement enables students to gain valuable industry experience, develop practical skills, and explore potential career paths, with some choosing to return to the same employer after graduation.
Students who wish to undertake a placement year are responsible for securing a suitable role relevant to their area of study, supported by the University’s extensive network of employers and dedicated Careers teams. Once a placement is secured, students can transfer onto the placement version of the course.
