Overview
The BA (Hons) Film and Screenwriting with Foundation Year is designed for students interested in writing, creating, and filmmaking, providing the skills and knowledge needed to begin a career in the creative film industry. Delivered over four years, the programme includes a Foundation Year that introduces key academic, creative, and collaborative skills, with progression dependent on successfully passing all modules. This initial year prepares students for further study by developing abilities in writing, research, media production, and teamwork.
The course explores a wide range of script-to-screen traditions from theoretical, practical, and industry perspectives. Students gain an understanding of cinema and television conventions, as well as a variety of screenwriting genres such as romantic comedy, thriller, science fiction, and horror. They are also introduced to different formats including feature films, single dramas, drama series, serials, sitcoms, soaps, and web series.
With a focus on the creative and aesthetic aspects of screenwriting, the programme develops skills in storytelling, narrative theory, pitching, and adaptation. Modules such as Film Primer and Script Development provide additional industry-relevant knowledge and practical experience. Students also have opportunities to engage with established film festivals linked to the course and access specialist film collections to support their studies.
