Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying degree is designed to prepare students for professional careers within the construction and built environment sectors. As an RICS-approved Partnership Centre, the programme aligns with industry standards and supports progression towards professional accreditation.

Students work collaboratively with academic staff, industry practitioners, and designers, developing the knowledge and skills required to contribute to the future of the built environment. The course combines theoretical understanding with practical application, ensuring graduates are equipped for the demands of the industry.

The programme addresses key challenges facing modern construction, including globalisation, complex regulatory frameworks, evolving client expectations, and the increasing role of technology and integrated project delivery. Students develop the ability to respond to these challenges through innovation and problem-solving.

Learning is supported by engagement with industry partners, enabling students to build both intellectual and practical competencies aligned with the expectations of professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The degree equips graduates with the technical knowledge, professional skills, and industry awareness required for careers in quantity surveying and related fields.
