Bachelor of Arts - Classics
University of New Brunswick - Fredericton
What you will study
Program Description Travel back in time to ancient Greece and Rome by studying how art, architecture, mythology, history, science, philosophy, and the language of the time have shaped what students now understand as the modern Western world. Using literature and archeology as guides, students will learn about ancient civilizations in a fresh and compelling way.
UNB offers two approaches to the study of classical antiquity. For students intending to pursue the study of ancient Greece and Rome at a graduate level, a program focusing on ancient Greek and Latin languages, and a critical knowledge of the works of ancient authors in their original languages.
For students planning to enter professional roles after the BA, they are offered a program of humanities courses, which includes: history, mythology, philosophy, and art history. In either stream, students are invited to enroll in courses in archaeology.
Hands-on learning: • Archaeological students are regularly required to participate in field school overseas • International experience connected with the Classics programs is available through short term travel to Rome, Italy, Greece and Turkey on UNB’s Travel Study Program • A select group of students to travel to Greece to study modern Greek language and to participate in archaeological digs • Volunteer with the New Brunswick Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America • Find community in the Classics Society
Skills students will acquire: • Read, analyze, organize research, and communicate findings across a multitude of areas—literary, philosophical, historical, architectural • Expert understanding of the great ideas from antiquity, which built the foundation of Western culture • Knowledge of the individual leaders and great thinkers in areas of continuing interest in time (e.g., politics, philosophy, art, drama, historiography)
