The Mechanics, Materials and Advanced Manufacturing theme is a major research area within the Engineering postgraduate programmes (EngD), focusing on innovative and sustainable approaches to materials and manufacturing technologies. The research aims to support social and economic development while improving health, safety, and performance in engineered systems by advancing the understanding and application of materials and structures.
Work within this theme involves the development, validation, and application of advanced models and simulation tools to study complex, non-linear systems across a range of spatial and temporal scales. This includes both natural and engineered systems, with particular emphasis on the behaviour and performance of advanced materials and structural systems.
The research also addresses the design and implementation of environmentally sustainable technologies, integrating hardware, software, and management systems to improve processes in key sectors such as transport, energy generation, and manufacturing. Through this interdisciplinary and applied approach, the programme equips researchers to contribute to technological innovation and industrial advancement.
