Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Filmmaking

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Filmmaking degree is designed for students who want to develop practical filmmaking skills, explore creative approaches, and prepare for careers within the screen industries. The course takes a practice-based, industry-focused approach, supporting students in building both technical expertise and a distinctive creative voice.

Students learn through hands-on experience, working across a range of genres, technologies, and filmmaking practices. Teaching is delivered by experienced practitioners and scholars, encouraging experimentation, skill development, and professional awareness within a rapidly evolving industry.

A key focus of the programme is the language of cinema, exploring how elements such as image, sound, editing, performance, and storytelling combine to shape meaning and audience experience. Through practical projects, students develop an understanding of how creative decisions contribute to effective filmmaking.

Learning takes place in purpose-built studios, sound stages, and on location, enabling students to gain experience in a variety of production environments. The course emphasises collaboration, helping students develop the skills needed to work effectively as part of a filmmaking team.

Students are encouraged to explore a range of film forms, including narrative, documentary, and experimental approaches. Alongside practical work, critical reflection supports the development of both artistic identity and professional capability.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The programme equips graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills required for careers in film and related screen industries.
