The Carpentry program prepares students with the fundamental skills and hands-on experience to embark on a carpentry career. Carpentry classes and curriculum cover residential and commercial construction and include planning and estimating, framing, roof and stair building techniques, finish carpentry, blueprint reading, building codes, using hand and portable power tools and other equipment common in the carpentry profession, and other related subjects. All credits from this program transfer to the Construction Management - Carpentry associate degree.
A graduate of this program will have the potential for employment in the following areas:
• Carpenter: assists in all areas of building construction; installs interior and exterior finish surface materials, interior floor and ceiling specialties, rough framing, building layout, stair construction, and interior trim. • General Laborer: performs basic yet important physical work tasks at building construction sites.
Program Outcomes: • Display a positive attitude toward the profession. • Perform general carpentry skills. • Identify, select, and supervise application of construction materials. • Read and interpret drawings and specifications. • Interpret and apply codes, regulations, and contract documents. • Select and maintain construction site tools and equipment. • Interpret basic designs and apply sound construction principles. • Estimate take off quantities and materials and labor necessary to complete a building project. • Use hand and power tools safely and efficiently. • Work diligently and productively. • Work as a productive team member. • Apply required safety standards in construction.
