Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Photography
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BA (Hons) Photography degree supports students in developing a distinctive creative and professional identity by combining technical skills, theoretical understanding, experimentation, and ethical practice.
The course explores a wide range of contemporary photographic disciplines, including fashion, documentary, moving image, landscape, portrait, and fine art photography. This breadth of study enables students to gain a well-rounded understanding of the field and develop their own areas of interest and specialism.
Collaboration with other creative disciplines is encouraged, providing opportunities to work alongside areas such as graphic design, illustration, and animation. This interdisciplinary approach helps students generate new ideas and expand their creative practice.
The programme also considers how photographers can build sustainable and successful careers across the visual arts and related industries, supporting the development of both creative and professional skills.
An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, offering the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
Graduates leave with a portfolio of work and the skills needed to pursue careers across a range of photographic and visual arts contexts.
