Cardiff University - Cathays Park
Astronomy and Astrophysics is a specialised research area within the Physics and Astronomy postgraduate research programmes (PhD), focusing on the study of the Universe through both observational and theoretical approaches. The programme makes extensive use of leading international telescopes, including facilities in Hawaii, La Palma, and space-based observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope. Research often involves multi-wavelength observations of regions of the Universe that are not visible in optical light, particularly those obscured by dust where stars, planets, and galaxies are actively forming.
The research addresses fundamental questions about the origins and evolution of cosmic structures. Key areas of investigation include the formation and development of galaxies, the processes governing star and planet formation, the distribution of chemical elements across the Universe, and the nature of matter and large-scale cosmic structures. These observational studies are complemented by a strong theoretical programme, using advanced computational modelling and simulations to explore the dynamics of molecular clouds, galaxy formation, and the evolution of the Universe.
In addition, the programme includes significant work in general relativity and gravitational wave astronomy, covering both the design of detection instruments and the analysis of signals from astrophysical phenomena such as black holes, neutron stars, and supernovae. Students benefit from access to high-performance computing resources and a collaborative research environment, enabling them to contribute to cutting-edge developments in astrophysics and cosmology.
