Digital innovation continues to expand the possibilities for organisations across all sectors globally. However, with increased innovation comes increased vulnerability. The MSc Applied Cyber Security course equips students with the tools and skills required to make informed, critical decisions when implementing cybersecurity solutions to complex, real-world challenges.
Designed with a forward-looking approach, the programme covers the fundamentals of software for digital innovation, big data and business intelligence, and agile development. Students also explore the professional, ethical, security, and societal implications of cyber security while developing a broad range of practical, professional, and transferable skills.
These include the ability to apply advanced, in-depth knowledge of complex cyber security concepts; analyse and synthesise information at a postgraduate research level; make informed, critical decisions when applying cybersecurity solutions; analyse and transform data to support organisational strategy; develop strong technical and interpersonal skills for immediate impact on cybersecurity projects; and understand professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities within the field.
A substantial master’s project forms a core part of the course, enabling students to apply their learning to a real-world or research-led problem. This provides an opportunity to demonstrate expertise by addressing complex challenges within an academic or industrial context.
The Advanced Practice route further strengthens the qualification by incorporating either a vocational or research-based internship. A vocational internship offers valuable industry experience and enhances employability, while a research internship allows students to develop analytical, teamwork, academic, and research skills through collaboration with an active research team. A research internship is guaranteed; however, vocational internships cannot be guaranteed. Students opting for a vocational placement are supported with practical guidance to help them identify, apply for, and secure suitable opportunities.
In addition to the degree, students have the opportunity to gain certifications from Microsoft, Adobe, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), further enhancing their professional profile. This course is well suited to individuals seeking to advance their academic knowledge and professional careers in cyber security.
