Cardiff University - Cathays Park
The Geography and Planning postgraduate research programme, offered by the School of Geography and Planning, provides a well-established and internationally recognised environment for advanced study in spatial planning, human geography, and urban design. The School supports PhD and MPhil research degrees and welcomes high-calibre applicants interested in undertaking innovative and impactful research that contributes to academic and policy debates at national and global levels.
Students are part of a vibrant and interdisciplinary research community, working under the guidance of two academic supervisors and an additional reviewer who supports academic development and preparation for the final examination. The programme includes a structured induction and ongoing training designed to develop research, analytical, and professional skills, preparing students for careers in academia as well as in industry and policy-related fields. Opportunities are also available for postgraduate researchers to gain teaching experience and develop pedagogical skills.
The School offers a supportive research environment with access to dedicated facilities, including shared office space and individual workstations. Students receive a personal research budget to support their studies, along with opportunities to apply for additional funding for conference participation. Further support is provided through the Doctoral Academy and Careers Service, which offer training, networking opportunities, and professional development activities, helping students build connections across disciplines and advance their research careers.
