Visual Neuroscience is a specialised research area within the PhD programme in Vision Sciences, offering students the opportunity to engage in advanced study of the neural mechanisms underlying vision. The programme is delivered within an internationally recognised centre of excellence, providing a strong research environment supported by extensive funding from organisations such as the MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, NIHR, the EU, medical charities, and industry partners. Students benefit from access to advanced laboratory facilities equipped for a wide range of techniques, including cell and organ culture, histology, molecular biology, genetics, protein analysis, spectroscopy, and high-resolution imaging.
Research in this area has led to a number of significant discoveries, including the identification of genes linked to optic atrophy, insights into the role of lipofuscin in cell dysfunction, and the involvement of matrix metalloproteinases in myopia development. Studies have also demonstrated how damage to the visual system can influence eye development, highlighting the role of the brain in visual processes. The programme supports the development of innovative experimental and genetic models to investigate conditions such as glaucoma, corneal transplantation, retinal damage, and other eye diseases, providing students with opportunities to contribute to impactful and translational research.
