Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Computer Science

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The Computer Science degree provides a comprehensive education in core and emerging areas of computing, preparing students for careers across the technology sector. The course explores subjects such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and wearable computing, alongside fundamental computer science principles.

Students develop a strong foundation in areas including programming, data structures and algorithms, information systems, computer networks, and computer architecture. As the course progresses, they build on this knowledge through advanced topics that emphasise software engineering skills, as well as subjects such as operating systems, cyber security, discrete mathematics, and web application development.

The programme also offers opportunities to gain additional industry-recognised qualifications through partnerships with organisations such as Cisco, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), enhancing employability and professional development.

In the final stage of the course, students complete an individual project that reflects real-world computing challenges. This project enables them to apply their technical knowledge, manage resources effectively, and design, implement, and evaluate solutions to complex problems.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The degree equips graduates with the technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and professional skills required for a wide range of careers within the computing industry.
