Overview

The BSc Artificial Intelligence degree is designed to address the growing demand for AI expertise across a wide range of industries. The programme equips students with advanced skills in areas such as deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, cloud computing, and generative AI, enabling them to develop intelligent software solutions that drive innovation.

In the first year, students build a strong technical foundation through modules shared with other computing and AI programmes. These cover core topics including programming, algorithms and data structures, computer systems, and web development, alongside an introduction to artificial intelligence and innovation through practical projects.

The second year focuses on developing specialist knowledge in artificial intelligence and machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. Students also gain experience in backend development, object-oriented programming, database engineering, and deploying machine learning systems, supporting the development of intelligent applications.

In the final year, students explore advanced topics such as deep neural networks, generative AI, cloud computing, and modern data storage systems, alongside the ethical and societal implications of AI technologies. A key component of the final year is an individual project, in which students design, implement, and evaluate a solution to a real-world AI problem, demonstrating their skills and readiness for professional roles.

The course offers an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study, providing an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

Graduates are prepared for a range of careers, including roles such as Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Machine Learning Specialist, Data Scientist, and Natural Language Processing Developer.
