Overview

The BSc (Hons) Game Programming degree is designed to prepare students for careers in the games industry by developing advanced programming skills alongside practical experience in modern game development environments. The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning in areas such as artificial intelligence, graphics programming, and mobile and console game development, supported by access to specialist laboratories equipped with high-performance PCs and VR development technologies.

Students gain experience using industry-standard tools including Unity, Unreal Engine, and custom-built game engines, while also developing an understanding of the hardware platforms used in game production, from mobile devices to high-end consoles. The programme emphasises core programming concepts such as algorithms, data structures, and software engineering practices, alongside the integration of AI and advanced graphics to create immersive gaming experiences.

Collaboration with industry partners provides opportunities to work on real-world projects, gain insight into current practices, and build professional networks. Students are also encouraged to participate in industry events and competitions, further enhancing their experience and portfolio. An optional placement year offers the chance to gain additional industry experience and strengthen career prospects.

The course offers an optional professional placement year, providing students with the opportunity to spend a full year working with an employer after successfully completing their second year of study. This placement enables students to gain valuable industry experience, develop practical skills, and explore potential career paths, with some choosing to return to the same employer after graduation.

Students who wish to undertake a placement year are responsible for securing a suitable role relevant to their area of study, supported by the University’s extensive network of employers and dedicated Careers teams. Once a placement is secured, students can transfer onto the placement version of the course.
