Overview
The postgraduate degree in Jewellery and Related Products is a well-established and innovative programme designed to develop students’ creative potential alongside a strong understanding of relevant theories, processes, and techniques.
The course places a strong emphasis on fostering entrepreneurial thinking, supporting students in defining their own design identity and career direction. Students work with a wide range of materials, manufacturing methods, and processes, exploring diverse approaches to design.
The programme builds on concepts related to personal adornment, body symbolism, and decorative metal objects, while also drawing connections with disciplines such as industrial design, fashion, fine art, and sculpture. Teaching is informed by philosophical, conceptual, and critical perspectives.
Through project-based learning, students develop creative, design, and making skills, as well as professional competencies. They are encouraged to generate concepts and products, analyse design challenges, and reflect on the relationships between personal goals, cultural contexts, market positioning, prototyping techniques, and emerging technologies.
Students gain a comprehensive understanding of techniques relevant to their own research and advanced creative practice, demonstrating originality in applying knowledge. They also develop an understanding of research methods and enquiry processes within the discipline, enabling them to create and interpret new knowledge and produce innovative designs.
The course is delivered at the internationally recognised School of Jewellery, located in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The Vittoria Street building combines its historic exterior with modern facilities, including specialist workshops, a dedicated library, and gallery and exhibition spaces.
