Overview

The Pre-Law Minor and Certificate programs at Bishop’s University are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the concepts of justice, law, and equity, as well as civic governance and responsible citizenship. The programs also build a broad base of knowledge across related disciplines, such as literature, history, politics, and criminology.

In addition to academic knowledge, the programs emphasize the development of essential core competencies—including problem-solving, critical reading, oral and written communication, research, organization and time management, leadership, and team building—that prepare students for success in law school or careers within the justice system.

As interdisciplinary programs, the Pre-Law Minor and Certificate offer students the opportunity to strengthen their abilities in logic and critical thinking, argumentation and debate, time management, and group dynamics. Aligned with the vision and values of Bishop’s University, the programs contribute to the institution’s mission of providing an exceptional undergraduate experience both inside and outside the classroom.

To develop these competencies, students select courses from a curated list across the Humanities, Social Sciences, and other areas, and must complete one capstone course offered annually during the Winter term. While the programs do not guarantee admission to law school, they are structured to support students’ preparedness and success upon admission. Course selection is guided by LSAT criteria and focuses on developing disciplinary knowledge in content, reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, writing proficiency, and logical reasoning.
