Overview
The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS) program at Bishop’s University is designed for individuals who wish to make a meaningful difference in the world, think globally while acting locally, and gain hands-on skills in ecological food production and agroecosystem management. The program also provides students with the opportunity to earn an internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate.
Located in an agriculturally rich region, Bishop’s University offers students valuable opportunities to visit, collaborate with, and learn from farmers in the Eastern Townships. The SAFS program places a strong emphasis on experiential learning and fieldwork, allowing students to connect theory with practice.
Unlike many other agricultural programs, SAFS focuses on improving the sustainability of all aspects of agriculture and food systems—addressing the social, economic, and environmental dimensions that shape the global food landscape. The program equips students with a comprehensive understanding of food systems from farm to table and beyond.
Courses in the program explore various aspects of modern agriculture and food production, from scientific and entrepreneurial issues to social dynamics, global food security, and the impacts of climate change. Through real-world applications and field-based learning, students develop the knowledge and practical skills necessary for successful careers as agriculturalists, entrepreneurs, food policy specialists, researchers, and professionals in a wide range of related fields.
