Overview
The BA (Hons) Film and Screenwriting degree is designed to develop students’ understanding of screenwriting across film and television, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience and awareness of industry trends. Teaching is delivered by experienced academics and practitioners, offering insight into international perspectives on screenwriting.
The course explores a wide range of script-to-screen traditions, considering theory, creative practice, and industry contexts. Students develop an understanding of cinematic and television conventions, as well as a variety of genres including romantic comedy, thriller, science fiction, and horror.
The programme also introduces different formats such as feature films, single dramas, drama series, serials, sitcoms, soaps, and web-based content. Students focus on key aspects of storytelling, including narrative structure, screenwriting techniques, pitching, and adaptation, supporting the development of original and engaging scripts.
An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
The degree equips graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills required for careers in film, television, and related media industries.
