Overview
The BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering with Foundation Year provides a comprehensive, future-focused education for those interested in designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure and systems that support modern society. The course develops a strong grounding in core civil engineering disciplines, including structural analysis, geotechnics, materials, and construction management, with a balanced focus on infrastructure, transportation, and buildings.
The four-year programme includes a Foundation Year, which offers a broad preparatory curriculum for students who do not meet the requirements for direct entry onto the degree. This stage supports the development of essential knowledge and skills, with progression dependent on successfully passing all modules.
Throughout the course, students apply theoretical learning through practical work in well-equipped laboratories, using industry-standard tools such as CAD, BIM, and FEM software. The programme also explores the impact of digital innovation, environmental responsibility, and climate resilience on the future of civil engineering.
With an emphasis on project-based learning, students engage with real-world engineering challenges, such as planning transport systems, designing sustainable buildings, and managing construction projects. Site visits and guest lectures from industry professionals further enhance learning and provide valuable insight into current engineering practice.
