Overview
Human Biosciences is a dynamic area of modern science that brings together multiple disciplines and advanced technologies to explore human biology and health. It provides a strong foundation for a wide range of careers within the growing life sciences sector.
The BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences degree is practice-led, enabling students to develop the practical and analytical skills valued by employers. Throughout the course, students gain insight into human life processes in both health and disease.
The programme covers a broad range of subjects, including human anatomy and physiology, nutrition and metabolism, molecular genetics, infection and immunity, pharmacology and toxicology, and science communication. These areas are central to healthcare, medical research, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The course has been developed with input from industry and healthcare professionals to ensure graduates are equipped with relevant and in-demand scientific skills.
To enhance employability, students have the opportunity to undertake an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study. This placement, which students are responsible for securing with support from university staff, provides valuable experience in industrial or research settings, although it is not guaranteed. Students who undertake a placement year can transfer to the relevant course pathway and will pay a reduced fee during this period.
In the final year, students complete an independent research project under the supervision of experienced academic staff, allowing them to apply their knowledge and develop specialist expertise.
During the first year, students study alongside those on the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme, before moving on to a Human Biosciences-focused curriculum in later years. This includes a wider range of optional modules, such as human nutrition and metabolism, biomaterials and tissue engineering, proteomics, pharmacology and toxicology, and science communication.
This flexible approach allows students to tailor their studies towards specific interests and career goals, including roles in drug development, clinical trials, research, or commercial areas such as sales and marketing. It also provides a pathway to postgraduate study in fields such as Sport and Exercise Nutrition, Dietetics, or Medical Engineering.
