The Ancient History postgraduate research programme, based within the School of History, Archaeology and Religion, offers students the opportunity to join a dynamic academic community known for developing future researchers. Under expert supervision, students engage in a stimulating research environment that encourages debate and the exchange of ideas through internationally connected research centres and seminar series. The programme supports a wide range of research projects across disciplines, often in collaboration with major funding bodies such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Wellcome Trust.

The programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge and expertise required for careers in research, public service, teaching, academia, and related sectors. Cardiff demonstrates strong research capacity in ancient history, with close links to archaeology, medieval history, and religious studies, particularly through the Centre for Late Antique Religion and Culture. Research spans a broad chronological range from Archaic Greece to Late Antiquity, and students are encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary approaches.
