Master of Science - Museums and Heritage Practice

The Museums and Heritage Studies program at the University of Chester provides a comprehensive exploration of how objects, sites, and cultural memories are discovered, preserved, and interpreted. Combining theory and practical skills, students investigate the qualities of artefacts, sites, and traditions, alongside the debates that influence our understanding of the past and its future potential. The course examines how social, political, and economic forces shape cultural heritage, and how excavation and collection practices continue to challenge and evolve modern museum collections.

Focusing on the formation, use, and interpretation of heritage in local, national, and international contexts, students engage with case studies spanning Prehistory, Roman and Medieval sites, historic houses, and contemporary museums. The program incorporates the heritage-rich landscapes of Chester, Shropshire, and the surrounding urban and rural areas of the Northwest, Midlands, and Wales.

Students interact with academic experts and industry practitioners, gaining insight into heritage management principles, sector standards from organisations like Museums Association, Collections Trust, Historic England, Cadw, the National Trust, and UNESCO. They develop practical skills in collections care, audience research, site interpretation, artefact analysis, and digital heritage applications. A key focus is on critically applying heritage practices to real-world objects and sites, enhancing public engagement, interpretation, and understanding.

The Professional Project module enables students to undertake independent research, placements, or group projects with heritage organisations, making the course ideal for those seeking careers in museums, archaeology, heritage management, or further academic study.
