Master of Arts - Journalism (Professional Placement)

The MA Journalism is a practice-based course designed to prepare students for work across a range of journalism settings, including print, digital, and broadcast media. The programme has been developed in line with National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) standards and is undergoing accreditation, providing a strong foundation for a professional career in journalism. It focuses on key areas such as newsgathering, reporting, media law, and the use of digital and data in contemporary journalism, while also exploring the relationship between journalism and public relations.

The course maintains links with a variety of media organisations, including The Guardian, The Birmingham Dispatch, Global Radio, and the BBC, alongside other outlets across broadcast, online, and print journalism. Students also benefit from the University’s expertise in independent and hyperlocal media, gaining the skills and knowledge needed to operate within this growing sector.

Teaching is delivered by staff with extensive industry experience in the UK and internationally. Students learn how news is sourced, produced, and delivered across multiple platforms and formats. They also gain practical experience by working on live projects, including contributions to the Birmingham Eastside platform and collaborations with external organisations, helping them understand the role of journalists in different media contexts.

The programme prepares graduates for careers in both established newsrooms and the independent media sector. Subject to accreditation, students may also have the opportunity to complete NCTJ examinations alongside their degree, with the potential to graduate with both a Master’s qualification and the NCTJ Level 5 Diploma in Journalism.
