The Mechanical Engineering degree with Foundation Year offers a distinctive, practice-based approach to learning, replacing traditional lectures and exams with hands-on tasks that address real-world engineering challenges across industries such as automotive, transport, manufacturing, technology, energy, and construction. Developed in collaboration with industry, the course is designed to equip students with both technical knowledge and essential employability skills, including communication, leadership, and teamwork.

The four-year programme begins with a Foundation Year, which provides a strong grounding in key areas such as mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, alongside practical experience through projects and laboratory work. This preparatory stage supports progression onto the main degree.

The second year serves as a common foundation, introducing core engineering concepts and allowing students to explore different disciplines before selecting a specialist pathway for the remainder of their studies. The course also offers an optional professional placement year after the second year, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Students are supported in securing placements through the University’s employer networks and careers services, with the option to transfer onto the placement route once a suitable role is obtained.
