The MSc Forensic Psychology programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and represents the first stage (Stage 1) towards achieving chartered status as a forensic psychologist.
The course provides students with an in-depth understanding of serious offenders and their victims, as well as key approaches used to support police investigations, including investigative psychology. It also explores the Criminal Justice System from a psychological perspective and examines the role of forensic psychologists across a range of professional settings. Students develop the knowledge and skills required to progress to Stage 2 training or further postgraduate study.
A strong emphasis is placed on research training, enabling students to design advanced research projects, conduct statistical analyses, and critically evaluate and report findings using scientific methods.
The programme aims to prepare students to work effectively with clients and professionals in forensic and related settings. It provides a comprehensive understanding of both theoretical and applied aspects of forensic psychology, encouraging critical evaluation of concepts and an awareness of the strengths and limitations of research evidence. The course integrates psychological theory with practical skill development and an understanding of professional practice.
The curriculum equips students with a detailed and critical understanding of key areas within forensic psychology, including investigative procedures, the court system, the development of offending behaviour, offender assessment and treatment, and the impact of crime on victims. It also develops knowledge of forensic techniques and the roles of professionals involved in the detection, prosecution, and management of offenders.
In addition, the programme enhances students’ abilities in research design, statistical analysis, and scientific reporting, while also strengthening transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, and the effective use of information technology. The course meets the academic requirements for Master’s-level study as defined by the Division of Forensic Psychology of the British Psychological Society.
