Students will first complete their Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Once complete they will move into the two years of their Bachelor of Education.
Rather than being concerned with a particular set of questions or a particular period of time, philosophy concerns itself with the nature of inquiry, thought, and argument itself, asking how each of these operates in the various areas of human life, from ethics and politics to the study of nature and reality. This means that philosophy students take up the truly big questions. At the same time, the skills they develop in pursuit of a degree in philosophy – careful reading, charitable interpretation and discussion, and rigorous argumentation – have proven themselves to be useful in innumerable fields within and beyond the university.
The Philosophy Program at Nipissing University is small and student-focused. Students get to know and work closely with both their professors and their peers. The department is particularly committed to introducing them to the history of philosophy, from the ancient period to the present. The program is designed to work well either as a stand-alone degree or as a combined degree with other programs, and there are numerous philosophy courses offered each year that do not have prerequisites and that are popular electives for students in other programs.
Ultimately, an undergraduate degree in Philosophy will also expose students to range of transferrable skills like critical and analytical thinking, clear communication, and strong reasoning which are useful and desired traits in any career and by all employers.
After completing their Bachelor of Arts, students will begin Nipissing University's Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, which was one of the first pre-service teacher education programs to be fully accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers.
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program is part of the university's Schulich School of Education and meets the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers for teacher certification (Certificate of Qualification). The program provided by the Schulich School of Education is rigorous and demands a high degree of commitment. To be successful, a student must display sensitivity to pupils, a sense of responsibility to the teaching profession, and a respect for knowledge.
Candidates may apply to enroll in one of three divisions in the program: • P/J -- Primary/Junior (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6) • J/I -- Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 to 10) • I/S -- Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7 to 12)
Upon successful completion of the two-year professional program, students will receive a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree.
