Master of Science - Sustainable Architecture and Healthy Buildings

The course is accredited by both the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and the University of Derby is recognised as one of only four CIAT Centres of Excellence in the UK. Students benefit from the University’s extensive industrial links and from the expertise of research-active and practice-active staff who bring considerable professional experience to their teaching. The programme enables learners to expand their understanding of design and technology, particularly in relation to energy efficiency in buildings, while gaining valuable practical experience through live sustainable design projects. Their studies are enriched by specialist guest lectures, seminars and workshops delivered by experts in the field, and by learning from influential academics engaged in important research into sustainable design. The MSc offers a contemporary focus on sustainable architecture, combining established scientific theories with design principles that promote healthy buildings and environments.

The course’s CIAT accreditation provides a significant pathway toward professional recognition and potential chartership. CIAT is a global, forward-thinking membership organisation representing around 10,000 individuals who practise or study within the discipline of architectural technology and who seek to achieve professional accreditation. Accreditation indicates that the programme has been rigorously assessed in relation to its content, structure and resources, and that it meets the standards required by the Institute.

While enrolled on the course, students benefit from free CIAT student membership, giving them access to a wide range of professional resources that support their development and enhance their studies. Upon graduation, they are eligible to apply for Associate Membership (ACIAT) and may receive exemptions against the educational standards of the MCIAT Professional Assessment, thereby supporting their progression toward becoming Chartered Architectural Technologists.
