Master of Arts - Virtual Production

The MA Virtual Production at Middlesex University combines creative vision with technical mastery, preparing students to design, prototype, and deliver virtual environments for diverse media contexts. The program explores hybrid sets, real-time engines, and virtual environments, emphasizing ethical, sustainable, and inclusive practices throughout all stages of production.

Students gain advanced skills in virtual production workflows, including real-time environments and hybrid film sets used across global film and television. Based in London’s creative hub, the program provides close industry connections with leading studios and post-production houses, fostering innovation in virtual filmmaking. AI tools, motion capture, and Unreal Engine pipelines are integrated into the curriculum to create immersive virtual worlds, while sustainable production methods and responsible creative practices are embedded throughout.

The course enhances employability through work-based learning, live briefs, and industry collaborations, allowing students to develop professional portfolios. Instruction is delivered by experienced filmmakers, technologists, and VFX specialists with current industry expertise.

Students study in MDX Studios’ state-of-the-art facilities, which include media labs with high-end hardware for graphic processing (NVIDIA), industry-standard software including Unreal Engine, Blender, and Houdini, a Motion Capture studio with a 25-camera OptiTrack system and Vanishing Point Viper for industry-level VFX and virtual production, film and animation studios, sound recording facilities, and suites for editing and color grading. AVID Media Composer and Pro Tools certification are offered. The Kit Hub provides a collection of professional cameras, sound recording equipment, and VR headsets, supported by strong partnerships with Canon, Sony, and AVID, ensuring students have access to the latest creative technologies.

MA programmes feature one- and two-year options with embedded, credit-bearing work placements on live industry projects.
