College Diploma - Dental Assistant (DA)

The Dental Assistant program at Western Community College is designed to prepare students for a future in the dental healthcare sector. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of a Licensed Dental Assistant, as outlined by the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) under the Health Professions Act of British Columbia.

The program’s learning outcomes and objectives focus on key elements of dental assisting practice. These include professional conduct; safe, ethical, and professional practice; effective communication; collaborative practice and teamwork; problem-solving and critical thinking; and the dental assisting process of care. Students are also trained in chairside assisting and clinical treatment, dental office administration, dental laboratory procedures, and health promotion and education for individuals and communities.

Upon successful completion of the program and fulfillment of provincial regulatory requirements, graduates are eligible to work as Licensed Dental Assistants in various settings. These include general dentistry practices, specialty dental offices, and dental departments within hospitals and public health organizations. Additional career opportunities may be available in areas such as dental sales, dental manufacturing companies, dental laboratories, and education.
