The learning disabilities nursing course prepares students to work within the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s professional framework, developing the skills and values essential to prioritising people, practising effectively, and promoting professionalism in care.

Throughout the programme, students gain the knowledge and confidence to support individuals with a learning disability in a compassionate, person-centred manner. The curriculum explores complex healthcare needs, health promotion, and health facilitation across the lifespan, while strengthening critical thinking and evidence-based practice that can make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.

Learning is structured with a 50/50 split between theory and hands-on experience. Students complete six placements alongside qualified learning disability nurses in a variety of settings, supporting the development of creative, collaborative, and confident practitioners.

Students based at the Lancaster campus may access placement opportunities with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, Lancashire and South Cumbria Foundation Trust, and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay. Self-funded enrichment placements, including potential overseas opportunities, may also be arranged.

With guidance from experienced academic staff, skills are developed through a blend of clinical skills laboratories, simulated hospital wards, lectures, workshops, guest speakers, and technical simulations, all supported by a range of online learning opportunities. These sessions are designed to strengthen independent thinking, problem-solving, and clinical decision-making.

Placement experiences also enable students to build connections with local services, providing valuable insight into community and specialist care. Many graduates secure multiple job offers, with diverse career opportunities across areas such as behaviour support, health facilitation, children and young people’s services, intensive support services, commissioning, mental health, forensic and secure settings, end of life care, and acute hospital environments. Postgraduate study and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities are available after graduation to support further career progression.

Applicants who have already completed a FdSc Nursing Associate programme may enter directly into the second year of the degree, enabling qualification as a learning disability nurse in two years.
