Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Sports Journalism

This Sports Journalism degree is designed to prepare students for careers in the media industry by developing the knowledge, values, and practical skills required of modern sports journalists. Graduates are equipped to work as agile, independent reporters across multiple platforms, with an understanding of the important role journalism plays in society both on and off the field of play. The course emphasises the ability to produce content across a range of formats, including audio, visual, written, and digital platforms. It also explores the democratic role of journalism in representing diverse voices and stories, enabling students to become adaptable and innovative professionals within a rapidly evolving industry. Developed in collaboration with industry experts and journalism researchers, the programme offers a combination of practical and theoretical learning. Students gain experience in key journalistic skills, from live reporting and interviewing to in-depth investigative storytelling, while also examining the wider challenges and changes facing the journalism sector. Teaching is informed by both research and professional practice, with opportunities for students to engage in real-world experiences, including placements where available. The course prepares students to report on a wide range of sports and to approach stories from multiple perspectives. Throughout the programme, students develop creative storytelling techniques alongside core journalistic principles. They also build skills in analysis, innovation, and critical thinking, enabling them to produce engaging content and respond effectively to the demands of the industry or progress to further study. To enhance employability, students have the opportunity to undertake an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study. This placement, which students are responsible for securing with support from university staff, provides valuable experience in industrial or research settings, although it is not guaranteed. Students who undertake a placement year can transfer to the relevant course pathway and will pay a reduced fee during this period.
