Year One Foundation Program in ALES - Transfer to Bachelor of Science - Forestry

When students join the University of Alberta’s Year One Foundation Program, they become U of A students from day one. They receive academic support that prepares them to enter a bachelor’s degree program in their second year, along with a “soft landing” to studying in Canada.

The University of Alberta’s Year One Foundation Program represents the first year of a four-year bachelor’s degree. It is designed for students who have course deficiencies and do not yet meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen degree program. Upon successful completion of the program, students progress directly into the second year without losing time on their path to graduation.

Why study this program? The Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences will prepare students for a dynamic career in forestry and related industries, including government, forest companies and consulting. Students will learn forest management techniques, including the protection and use of forested areas with consideration for policy, and ensuring sustainability and other social and cultural needs are met. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in several field schools where they will learn first-hand about forestry including soils, silviculture, water, fire, growth and yield, forest genetics, ecology and operations. This program also prepares students to become a Registered Professional Forester (RPF).
