The BSc (Hons) Forensic Science programme prepares students to become highly skilled and confident forensic scientists, capable of investigating crime scenes, analysing evidence, and presenting findings in court. Students have the opportunity to develop practical skills in a wide range of forensic facilities, including the Forensic Training Facility, specialist forensic laboratories, imaging suite, insectary, forensic anthropology suite, photography suite, vehicles, clandestine burial site, courtroom, and ballistics laboratory.

The course is accredited by The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, ensuring high professional standards. Students gain insights into all aspects of the profession by working alongside forensic scientists, fingerprint experts, police officers, lawyers, and judges, and can undertake practical placements and internships, including an optional placement year through a partnership with the East Midlands Scientific Operations Unit (EMSOU). Optional modules in chemistry enable eligibility for Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The course content aligns with global initiatives, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting priorities such as ‘Peace and Justice’.

Forensic Science at Derby offers a dynamic and practical approach to learning, going beyond popular media portrayals to provide an authentic understanding of the profession. Students are guided through the full range of forensic practices and processes, from crime scene analysis to presenting evidence in court. They investigate mock crime scenes, including break-ins, assaults, road accidents, and drug and computer-related crime, and present findings in a refurbished courtroom, gaining experience of cross-examination by barristers to prepare for real-world scenarios.

The programme provides opportunities to develop high-level skills using the latest biological and analytical equipment, including fingerprint, drug, DNA, bodily fluids, and blood pattern analysis. Students can also explore the applications of entomology, anthropology, and taphonomic processes in forensic investigations. The course combines practical experience with engagement alongside forensic scientists, fingerprint experts, researchers, police officers, lawyers, and judges, offering contemporary perspectives on the role of the forensic scientist.
