The Population Medicine research programme offers postgraduate students the opportunity to undertake advanced study within a multidisciplinary environment focused on improving health and healthcare systems. Research in this area extends beyond individual patient care to consider the broader context in which healthcare is delivered, including prevention strategies, service design, and the social and environmental factors influencing health outcomes. The programme emphasises research that addresses the causes of health problems, evaluates treatment approaches, and seeks to enhance the quality, cost-effectiveness, and equity of healthcare provision.
Students benefit from a collaborative and supportive research culture within the Division of Population Medicine, where projects are guided by teams of senior researchers, clinician scientists, and non-clinical academics. Supervision is multidisciplinary, ensuring a broad perspective on complex health challenges. Researchers are encouraged to actively engage with the academic community by presenting their work at regular weekly meetings and at the annual School of Medicine Postgraduate Research Day.
The programme also provides strong support for professional development, including opportunities to attend training courses and academic conferences. Close access to supervisors, ongoing feedback, and mentoring structures help students refine their research and develop as independent researchers, preparing them for careers in academia, healthcare, and policy-related fields.
