Neuroscience is a specialised research area within the Biosciences postgraduate research programmes (MPhil), focusing on understanding the nervous system across multiple levels, from molecular and cellular processes to behaviour and cognition. The programme encompasses a broad range of research areas, including neuronal development, molecular and cellular neuroscience, neurophysiology, synaptic plasticity, learning and memory, and neurodegeneration associated with ageing.

The research aims to integrate findings across these areas to improve understanding of both healthy brain function and the mechanisms underlying neurological disorders. A key objective is to translate this knowledge into practical applications, such as the development of pharmacological treatments, cell-based therapies, and improvements in clinical practice.

Students benefit from a collaborative research environment supported by major centres and initiatives, including the Cardiff Neuroscience Centre, which brings together expertise in neuroscience, psychology, and psychiatric genetics. The division also hosts specialised facilities such as an experimental MRI centre and a brain repair research group, providing access to advanced technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities.
