Kingston University’s BSc (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice course enables students to explore the causes and consequences of crime and how societies respond to it. Students examine the impact of crime on individuals and communities, study victimisation, and analyse justice systems both in the UK and internationally.
The course combines academic study with practical experience through activities such as court observations, simulated crime scene investigations, and case study analysis. These opportunities allow students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. In addition, students can take part in internships, volunteering, and work placements with organisations including criminal justice agencies, NGOs, charities, and local authorities.
Students also benefit from a guest speaker programme featuring professionals working in the field, such as police officers, probation staff, and NGO leaders. Kingston University’s proximity to London’s major legal institutions and criminal courts provides further opportunities for visits, insights, and hands-on experience.
The course draws on criminology, sociology, law, politics, and psychology to develop a critical understanding of crime and justice. Students explore how crime is defined, why certain behaviours are criminalised, how justice is applied, and the social inequalities that influence offending and victimisation.
Throughout the three-year programme, students study a wide range of topics, including crime and deviance, criminal law, policing and punishment, victimisation and social harm, crime and the media, youth justice, global crime and justice, and digital crime. The course also develops strong research and analytical skills, preparing graduates for diverse career paths or further academic study.
Students have the flexibility to tailor their degree through options such as work placements, volunteering internships, research projects, or a study abroad year, allowing them to align their studies with their interests and career ambitions.
Graduates of the programme are well prepared for careers within the criminal justice system and related fields, including roles in probation, policing, youth offending teams, the prison service, victim support, advocacy, NGOs, social research, policy development, and positions within local and national government.
Students have the option to take an additional year to study abroad, undertake a year-long work placement overseas, or combine both experiences.
