Wittenborg College was founded in 1987 in the Dutch Hanseatic city of Deventer by a local businessman, H. Nijkamp. The school became known for its Dutch language programmes in banking and insurance and real estate management, providing these industries in the Netherlands with hundreds of college graduates. Its main source of students in the late 1980s and early 1990s was military personnel leaving the armed forces due to the abolition of national service in the Netherlands.
In 2002, Wittenborg partnered with BTC,[7] an international family consultancy specialised in corporate training programmes, and founded the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences which began developing its international, English language, business programmes, gaining state accreditation from the European-recognised NVAO in 2006.
Since 2006, Wittenborg has developed as a business school focused on entrepreneurship and SME management within an international context. Since then, the school has attracted students from around the world to study in the Netherlands emerging as an international management institute focusing on business, hospitality and communication within a global context. All programmes are offered in English to students from more than 97 countries.[8]
In September 2016, in her letter to the Dutch Parliament, Minister of Education, Culture and Science (in Dutch "minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap") Jet Bussemaker, mentioned Wittenborg as an example of an institute that had implemented internationalisation across its whole profile.[9]

Tutors at Wittenborg are part of a team of supervisors who will assist students in understanding their curriculum, their obligations and their rights as a student. They will also be responsible for keeping track of a student’s study progress and carry our appraisal talks that result in updated study agreements. All aspects regarding study can be discussed and a student’s process tutor must co-ordinate closely with student administration staff and the registrar, regarding progress.
Each student is assigned a process tutor who will support them throughout their studies.
The bachelor’s tutor is generally the same for phases 1 and 2, however may change in phase 3, due to support requirements for work-placement.
The MSc process tutor will generally be the Wittenborg programme coordinator.
The MBA process tutor will generally be the MBA programme coordinator, however for part-time (EMBA) students a different process tutor will be allocated.
Overall, the tutor will play a central role in introducing students to life at an institution such as Wittenborg, from a study perspective, helping students understand the education guides, module guides, student handbooks and timetables.
For MSc students, the student tutor will also liaise with teaching and tutoring staff at the University of Brighton, when required.
The team of tutors will also provide students with general information regarding the facilities at Wittenborg, life in Apeldoorn and Amsterdam, including library facilities, sports facilities, access to organisations and companies, life in the Netherlands, and preparation for ‘life after Wittenborg’.
All individual practical issues of administration, including travel, housing, insurance, health matters, etc. should be discussed with relevant student administration staff, with the starting point being the front desk!
Wittenborg's houses and apartments provide living space for between 4 and 6 students per location. They are equipped with a communal living space, kitchen facilities such as a fridge, microwave, cooker and utensils, as well as a shared bathroom, television, and Internet connection. Basically everything you need is at hand. Most of the bedrooms are single bedrooms, though you may have to share a large bedroom with another student, depending on the accommodation.
Wittenborg provides apartments and houses in several locations across Apeldoorn, all within close cycling (and in some cases even walking) distance of the school.
Wittenborg was established in the historic hansiatic city of Deventer in 1987, opened by the mayor on September 21st 1987. In the summer of 2010, the University of Applied Sciences was invited by the municipality of Apeldoorn to move into a state of the art, purpose built facility within the public college Aventus. Wittenborg opened its new location, on the south side of the Apeldoorn central railway station in September 2010.
In September 2015 Wittenborg opened its second Apeldoorn location at Spoorstraat 23, a unique and historic school building situated in the centre of the new university square created by the city to the north of the railway station.
Only 5 minutes is required to walk between both campus locations. In Apeldoorn Wittenborg has grown to over 900 students from more than 100 nationalities and because of its international character it takes pride in offering al its students quality student housing within its own campus accommodation in the centre of the town, as well as in own managed student apartments close to the university.
