About London South Bank University

London South Bank University (LSBU) is a public university in Elephant and CastleLondon. It is based in the London Borough of Southwark, near the South Bank of the River Thames, from which it takes its name.London South Bank University was founded in 1892 as the Borough Polytechnic Institute.


It has since undergone several name changes, becoming the Polytechnic of the South Bank in 1970, South Bank Polytechnic in 1987, South Bank University in 1992 and London South Bank University in 2003. The university has also merged with a number of other educational institutions.

Cultural life at London South Bank University

Each of our Schools offers unique and exciting facilities, designed to improve your learning experience and make you industry-ready. From film studios to engineering labs, electron microscopes to design workshops and hospital simulations, our teaching provides you with real world, cutting-edge facilities and equipment.

The Digital Architecture Robotics Lab (DARLAB) allows research in the field of robotics fabrication.


Our Building Information Modelling (BIM) Centre uses the latest software, 3D printers and scanners to explore integrated delivery, simulation and BIM.


The Health and Social Care facilities include a range of innovative clinical or simulated environments that help you to practice and develop the necessary skills for their chosen careers. From sophisticated skills laboratories, with life-like hospital wards, simulated patients and a radiography-testing suite with the latest 3D imaging.

The Business School moved into its new home in 2019, complete with modern flexible teaching rooms, event and networking space, state-of-the-art technology and a wellbeing zone.


ZONES is our learning environment transformation programme and one of the biggest and most exciting projects in LSBU's history.  We’ve invested over £65million on our London campus over the past few years to create dedicated zones to support every aspect of student life.

Accommodation Options at London South Bank University

LSBU has four halls of residence right in the heart of central London, giving students a perfectly-located yet safe and comfortable base. All of our halls are within a 10-minute walk of our Southwark campus.

Our residences have great public transport connections, whether you’re travelling by bus, train or London

Underground, and are a close to many of London's key attractions and amenities.

We have over 1,400 single occupancy bedrooms spread across the four self-catered halls. Our residences feature:


All rooms are non-smoking and have access to a kitchen. Flats accommodate between two and nine residents, depending on the building.

Alongside our standard single bed offering, we also offer a limited number of Queen and Premium bedrooms. Queen bedrooms are larger rooms with a queen-sized bed and our premium rooms have been furnished to a high standard and are available with standard or queen-size beds.

Location and Infrastructure

The main campus is in the heart of London.

The area is served by excellent mainline rail, bus and tube connections. A £3 billion investment has delivered a new public leisure centre, affordable homes and job opportunities.


The University is in easy walking distance of underground and leading overground stations. We are only 20 minutes away from the Thames. We encourage walking and cycling, and have bicycle racks on campus.
